| Desoto is a city in Dallas County , Texas . Desoto has a total area of 21.6 square miles and is located at 32°35'57?N, 96°51'32?W. Desoto is placed 15 minutes south of the Dallas Central Business District at the intersection of I-20 and I- 35E.
Desoto is one of the oldest communities in Northern Texas , with the first settlement dating back to 1847. The earliest industry was cotton gin. The city was incorporated in 1949. The first census conducted in the city in 1950 revealed a population of 298 people and a total of eight businesses. Woodland Hills, a small, incorporated community to the northwest of Desoto, was merged with Desoto in 1974.
Desoto had a population of 37,600 residents as per the 2000 census. Current estimates put the figure at nearer to 45,500. The demographics of the city have undergone major changes with a shift from the overwhelming white population to a greater concentration of African Americans.
The Desoto Independent Schools District, which accounts for most of Desoto, has eleven schools with 7,000 students in them. The other schools are in the Dallas Independent School District and the Duncanville Independent School District . There are a number of private and parochial schools in the city.
Desoto has a vast amount of warehouse area and land available for lease. The city offers several incentives for encouraging industrial and commercial growth.
