Fort Worth is the fifth largest city in Dallas and the 19 th largest in the United States , with a population of nearly 535,000 and covering an area of almost 300 square miles. The city is the county seat of Tarrant County , and the second largest cultural and economic center of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. Fort Worth is located at 2°45'54.82?N, 97°18'29.08?W. The city's population is made up of 60% white, 20% African American, and the remaining divided over various other groups.

 

The city gets its name from a fort built in 1849 by Major Ripley Arnold in honor of General William Jenkins Worth. The fort was used to protect the white settlers from Indian attacks. It became a busy town with a number of gambling parlors, saloons, and dance halls, during the heyday of the cattle drives, when millions of cattle were driven north.

Places of interest include the Sundance Square , named after the infamous Sundance Kid, Fort Worth water gardens, Fort Worth Convention Center with a 11,200 seat multi-purpose arena, and the Bass Performance Hall which hosts symphony orchestra, ballet theater, Operas and concerts. The cultural district comprises of a number of museums with a range of themes. The Parks district is home to a botanical garden, Japanese garden and the Fort Worth zoo.

Most of the city is served by the Fort Worth Independent School District . Parts of Fort Worth are also served by a number of other ISDs, numbering 13 in all. Fort Worth also has a number of private schools, colleges and three different universities woith campuses of another two located in the city.
