A band of French colonists settled in the area in 1848 and established the Icarian Colony, but abandoned it a year later. Thereafter the area remained sparsely populated for the better part of the century until the early 1880s when the town lots were sold by its owner Chet Helm and a person called Riley. Development began soon, with the opening of a general store within a year, making the community a center for farmers. With the expansion of the Santa Fe railroad to Purcell , Oklahoma , the community began to grow around the newly laid railroad track. In 1887 the town petitioned a post office to be named after the chief engineer of the Santa Fe line, Mr. Justin Sherman. By the end of the century, Justin already had a general store, a grocery, a hotel and a cotton gin. At one point of time, the community even had a movie theater, a weekly newspaper, and a preparatory school. Justin was incorporated in 1947.
